The Law of Attraction: Do You Have Unrealistic Expectations?
One issue that is fairly common among Law of Attraction followers is that they often have unrealistic expectations about their thoughts, beliefs and actions. When we understand that our thoughts become things, it’s natural to feel pressure to think the right thoughts, behave the right way and manifest only good things. Unfortunately, holding unrealistic expectations can actually cause us to feel worse in the long run, and this often makes the process of conscious creation harder than it needs to be.

In truth, perfection is not something that we should aiming for. Perfectionism causes us to beat ourselves up whenever we make “mistakes.” When we beat up on ourselves, we drive our vibrations down and we create more discord in our lives. Instead of improving our thoughts, behaviors and manifestations, perfectionism only makes things worse.
So, instead, it’s usually best to accept the fact that we aren’t going to be perfect all of the time. We will have periodic negative thoughts, beliefs and actions and that’s ok. With that in mind, below are a few common unrealistic expectations in the Law of Attraction community.
Common Unrealistic Expectations in the Law of Attraction Community
“I should never have negative emotions”
Law of Attraction followers are usually quite aware that their emotions are very, very important. As such, they often spend a great deal of time trying to cultivate feelings of love, excitement, joy and passion. While it is a wonderful thing to aim for high vibrational emotions, there are bound to be some times in our lives when positive emotions don’t come easily.
If you find yourself in a situation that makes you feel sad, angry or anxious, accept the emotion and give yourself permission to feel the way that you feel. By making it ok to feel the way that you do, you will actually shorten the duration of the negative emotion. Tell yourself that you will be sad, angry or anxious as long as you need to feel that way, and when the emotion has served its purpose, you will move on.
By allowing yourself to feel the way that you do, you actually support yourself with unconditional love. You wouldn’t criticize your friends or loved ones when they were down in the dumps, so give yourself the same support when you need it.
A few bad emotions here and there are not going to be enough to drive your baseline vibration down significantly. Work on raising your vibration when you are up to the task, and when you aren’t, make it your intention to allow yourself to feel the way that you do without judgement or criticism.
“I should never behave negatively”
Though we know that to keep a higher vibration it is better to smile, be polite, and spread kindness and cheer, we still might occasionally find ourselves engaged in negative actions like yelling, complaining, crying or gossiping. Though these actions keep us grounded in a lower vibrational frequency, they sometimes serve a very positive purpose.
In times of extreme stress, sometimes it helps to blow off steam. A little bit of yelling or a good cry can actually feel better than repressing your negative emotions. If you don’t allow yourself to act the way you really want to, or if you criticize yourself for your negative actions, you are likely to feel helpless and out of control. This will only draw out your negative emotions for a longer period of time. So instead, when negative actions happen, let them out without feeling bad about it.
Another thing to consider is that negative actions like gossip, crying and complaining are all behaviors that many of us have been doing for years and years. It’s hard to entirely turn off behaviors like these when they are so engrained in our lives. Just like we wouldn’t criticize a child who was learning to read every time they stumbled over a word, we shouldn’t criticize ourselves every time we engage in a lower vibrational action.
So if you are feeling like it is difficult to eliminate all of the negative behaviors in your life, please cut yourself some slack. It’s probably going to take a little bit of time to get rid of most of them . Pat yourself on the back for the improvements that you are making, and let it slide when you move back a step or two. No one’s perfect, and you can still be highly skilled at conscious creation even if you engage in these behaviors once in a while.
“I should not have bad manifestations”
When we understand the Law of Attraction and start to have some successes with it, it can be very natural to get upset when we have a “bad manifestation.” We might not understand why we got into the car crash, lost our favorite piece of jewelry, or got into a fight with our best friend.
In times when bad manifestations occur, don’t automatically blame yourself for doing something “wrong.” There’s probably a very good reason for why this manifestation occurred, and sometimes things aren’t always what they seem.
So when we have a negative emotion, engage in a negative action or suddenly manifest something we don’t want, it’s good to take a step back and remember that we are human. Though we might want to be “perfect” so that we can manifest our dreams as quickly as possible, it’s normal to have a bad moment here and there. Allowing it to be ok to not be perfect is a very important step towards becoming a Law of Attraction master.
As one final note…
It’s also good to remember that sometimes our negative states can set the backdrop for life’s most exhilarating moments. When we are in a bad place, and we suddenly get back into the flow, the sensation of moving from negative to positive can be extremely liberating and exciting. It’s like the feeling of finally getting pregnant after years of trying, or finally acing a test in a class that we’ve been underperforming in all semester. The feeling of victory is much more rewarding when it is offset by earlier failures and disappointments.
Remember, without any of the “bad,” the “good” would be a bit dull. So a little bit of bad here and there really is a good thing, and it’s important to remember this in moments when we feel inadequate.

So go easy on yourself when things aren’t going as smoothly as you’d like. As long as you continue to make an effort to direct your thoughts and behaviors in a more positive direction, you will continue to climb the vibrational ladder and have success in manifesting the things you’d like to have. Bad moments are just temporary setbacks and obstacles on the journey to your next rewarding victory.
