4 Effective Strategies to Find Balance in Life
There is a lot to do in this lifetime, and there are many moving parts. Do you ever wonder how you are supposed to keep it all together and get it all done? How do you keep a clean house, a happy family, an active social life, a productive career, pay your bills, stay in shape, run all of your errands and keep all of your appointments? Sometimes, it can be hard to find balance in life.
So, how do you create harmony and get all of your needs met at the same time? I find myself out of balance here and there, so the answer to this question is been one I’ve been working on for years.
Here are four strategies that help me find balance in life. I hope you find them useful as well.
1. Make sleep a priority.
Anyone who’s had a newborn baby in their house, worked more than one job or had to cram for exams knows how awful you can feel after a night without enough sleep.
Sleep is critical for your memory storage, health and mood. It might be fun to stay up late, but be mindful of when you need to wake up each morning and make sure you are getting a good night’s sleep every night. You’ll get more done each day and feel better doing it.
I would probably go so far as to say this is the most important thing you can do to achieve or maintain balance.
2. Take long breaks from your “big” focus every day.
We all have something that is our “big” focus in life. For some, it is family, for some it is work, for others it is social life.
Whatever the “big” focus is in your life, be aware of how much time it is eating out of your day, and away from the other things you care about. Some people (myself included) get obsessed with their big focus, and if this is the case for you-be sure to step away from time to time.
When we focus intently on one area of our life, it becomes bigger and bigger-and the other areas in our life begin to shrink. We must, therefore, be careful to give attention to every area of our lives that is important to us.
This can take some discipline, as we may find ourselves getting sucked into our “big” focus frequently.
As for me, I can get obsessed with work, so I make it mandatory to take at least two long breaks during my day. During break times, I get up and do the other things that are important to me for a few hours, like working out, running errands, checking in with friends and spending time with my husband and kids.
It can be hard to pry yourself away from what you are primarily focused on, but having a balanced life requires you attend to all of your needs, rather than just one.
3. Remember the big picture.
Sometimes we let life get away from us, and we forget what is really important to us. When you feel life becoming unbalanced (and this can happen to the best of us), take a quick time out. Ask yourself how your future self will feel about what you are doing right now.
By stepping into our future shoes, we can better see where we are at in the current moment, and how we might adjust our behaviors to achieve better balance and harmony.
I like to ask myself how I would feel about my current actions and choices on my deathbed, because this gives me some extra clarity on the importance of how I am spending each day of my life. This strategy reminds me of when I am neglecting something that is important to me.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: meditating is one of the very best things you can do for yourself. Meditation clears out cluttered, negative thinking and helps us gain clarity on how to flow through the day in a productive, fulfilling manner. Some would say they don’t have time to meditate, but as the old Zen saying goes:
“You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes every day, unless you are too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.”
If you haven’t yet tried daily meditation, start small with just 10-15 minutes every morning for one week and see what happens. I’ve notice a huge improvement in my ability to keep things running smoothly when I am meditating regularly, so I keep it as a daily habit.
When you find yourself becoming unbalanced, try out these strategies to find better harmony and flow in your life. Evaluate your sleeping habits, take long breaks from your “big” focus, think about the big picture and add some meditation into your day. I’ve found that when I used these four strategies together, life flows easily, and I feel much more confident in my ability to “get it all done.”
