“Be a light for others” was written by guest contributor, Babajide Faseyi.
Back in my boarding high school, there was an event called the candle light service that was held around the time that every class was on their way to graduate. And during a portion of the event, the entire class would gather around in a circle with everyone holding a candle.
There would be one person in the circle who would first light their candle, and then that person would help to light the candle of the next person, and on and on it would go until all the candles of everyone within the circle were lit.
This portion of the candle light service stands out to me because what we were being taught was how to live in the world. We were being taught that our actions and behavior should always reflect the attitude of being a light for others.
And why is it important to be a light for others? It is important to do so because that is the same way you would want others to be to you.
The candle light service reminds me to reflect on the qualities which can be considered to be like light and to do my best to live by those qualities. It reminds me that those qualities which can be considered to be like light such as love, peace and joy are the true qualities that are worth spreading around, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have had that experience while I was in my younger years.

About the Author: My name is Babajide Faseyi. I was born and raised in Nigeria and then moved to the United States for college at the age of 19. In my 20’s, I became acutely aware that there was more to life than I had been taught and this led me to a deep search. I read voraciously. After a period of disillusionment with not having an outlet for the creativity that I felt within myself, I encountered Eckhart Tolle’s book, The Power of Now. And thus, the journey of knowing who I truly am and the discovery of what I have to offer creatively began.
