The SMILE Challenge: A Fun Exercise for Positive People

A few weeks ago, I got the idea to try something I’m now calling “The Smile Challenge” from a commenter on Raise Your Vibration TODAY’s Facebook page. (I will keep that commenter’s name anonymous, but if you are reading-thank you for the suggestion! It is fantastic.)

The suggestion is simple.

Make it your goal to make 10 people smile at a particular place in your life. The commenter did this practice at the gym, and made it his daily habit to get 10 people smile each day while exercising.

You could practice this smile challenge at the office, in your neighborhood, or even just at home with your friends or family. The only real trick to the challenge is making it YOUR goal to intentionally make someone smile 10 times a day.

I’ve been trying the smile challenge out for the last few weeks and have been having a lot of fun with it. If you’ve been wanting to spread some positivity around, it’s a great exercise I’d highly recommend.

Now, sometimes smiling at strangers can be awkward, can’t it? If you find that it feels weird or a bit “off” to show off your pearly whites, here are a few suggestions I have to make it easier to get the ball rolling with this challenge.

Smile Challenge Suggestions:

  1. Smiling is easier with sunglasses on. I live in Florida (where sunglasses are part of the everyday attire) and have noticed that when I have my shades on smiling and friendly interaction seems to come a bit easier with strangers.
  2. Kids are easy practice. Kids LOVE to smile for no good reason at all, and haven’t developed all of the social hangups some adults have. If you are looking for easy smiles, the younger the better!
  3. Take advantage of social interactions. Just staring someone down across the room and smiling at them may feel a little weird after all! So, if you find yourself bumping into someone as you round a corner or someone holds a door open for you-take advantage of the opportunity. Smile broadly and wait for the other person to reciprocate.

The fun thing about the smile challenge is that it makes it very, very obvious just how contagious positive energy is. The more we see our smiles turning into other people’s smiles, the better we all feel.

10 intentional smiles a day can go a long way when it comes to raising the vibration of the collective. When you think about it, taking on a challenge like this is an excellent way to help humanity and the world at large.

I have tried smile “therapy,” and it is fun. When I walk my dog I try to give a smile to everyone I see. It seems to help them, and it helps me feel better, also. A nice “Hi” or “Hello” thrown in doesn’t hurt. At first it is a bit awkward, especially when you get no response, but after awhile, it’s automatic and easy.

    Andrea Schulman, I do declare.
The “Smiling Challenge” is not a good idea. It”s ridiculous on its face.

I LOVE this idea and am definitely going to start using it! I know how I feel when a stranger smiles at me in passing, so why wouldn’t I want to do that for others!? Thanks for the idea and motivation to put this into practice. I feel better just thinking about doing this! 🙂

Thanks for the reminder. I noticed that when I was at the store with my daughter and we were talking and laughing and I’d turn to someone with that big smile on my face that they’d smile back at me. I’m one who feels really awkward if I just smile at someone and they don’t return the smile but I’m going to try putting it into practice more using these suggestions.

I live in Belgium and Im someone who always smile with people while greeting them on my way. Many people are cold moods and never give me my smile back but I continue because Im born with it and will always smile .
