Everyone Is Doing the Best They Can (Believe it or Not!)

Here’s an assumption you can take to the bank: Everyone is doing best they can based on where they are, what they know and what they believe.

I didn’t used to believe this whatsoever, though!

For example, I used to get absolutely INFURIATED when pedestrians would cross the road slowly in front of my car. It literally enraged me.

“Why can’t they hurry up? Don’t they see me here? How RUDE!” I would seethe to myself.

As I’ve grown up with the Law of Attraction, however, I’ve come to see behaviors like this in a new light.

Today, I know without a shadow of a doubt that everyone is doing the best they can. We each are constantly, and quite literally, making the choices that we believe are best.

For instance….

Let me related this thesis to my younger self. Back in my twenties I was not a “positive person,” rather I was chronically angry and stressed out. I was an addict, and had been labeled a “borderline personality” by the mental health profession.

However, I didn’t see myself as a “bad person” who was making “bad choices.” I didn’t know that my pessimistic attitude was wrecking havoc in my life.

No, indeed not. I believed I was viewing the world accurately, and was correct in my negative assumptions. If anything, I believed that I was a realist, honest and someone who could be depended on to “tell it like it was.”

Through today’s lenses, I can see how my logic was disadvantageous to me.

However, regardless of how my life has changed since adopting a more positive lifestyle, one thing has remained constant. Regardless of where I’ve been in life, I’ve ALWAYS been doing what I believed was in my best interests.

For a long time, these actions included included drugs, alcohol and heavy partying. I didn’t see these as bad influences, rather I saw them as vehicles that allowed me to relax, have fun and cope with the negative world I lived in.

Though many people see these activities as self-destructive, I did not. I saw them as actions that benefitted me highly. To me, these were necessary activities that allowed me to live the best life I could live.

I believed drugs and alcohol made me happier, more social and more fun to be around. I believed they not only benefitted me, but everyone I spent time with!

Today, fortunately, I’ve come to learn I can be truly happy without these kind of influences. But when you don’t know this truth, drugs and alcohol can appear to be a blessing rather than a curse. I’m sure many other people out there understand this logic.

Another example…

Let’s take it back to the beginning with the slow-moving pedestrians.

Today, I see the world’s “rude” slow movers differently. Not only have I become a Law of Attraction enthusiast since my days of infuriation, but I’ve also become a mother and someone who has had to deal with chronic pain. These experiences have given me tremendous insight into the idea that everyone is doing the best they can.

Now, when I see slow-moving pedestrians, I remind myself that each person I encounter is doing the best that they can.

That guy who’s moving at a snail’s pace? He may be dealing with severe back pain or a bum knee. While I’m driving comfortably in my car, he may be painfully struggling to cross the road. He could use my love and compassion, not my seething stares.Sudden Illness & Injury

That mom who’s taking her time with the stroller? She’s likely exhausted from taking care of a needy infant. She’s got much bigger fish to fry than my judgmental impatience.

The moral of the story here? Cut everyone (including and especially yourself!) a break. We are all just doing the best that we can. Sometimes, it might not appear that we are making good decisions, but regardless-you can guarantee that we believe we are.

You’re right! I’ll remember this when I get frustrated with people. And Wow, you seem to have certainly made changes for the better. I would love to hear more of your personal story and how you got to where you are now. Thanks Andrea.
