How I Really Feel About “Keeping it Real”
In much of society today, “keeping it real” is considered a virtue.
At least here in the US, those who keep it real are often depicted as being honest and straightforward. You know where you stand with someone who keeps it real.
Now, I cannot dispute that “keeping it real” is honest. That being said, I think that regularly “keeping it real” can be a disadvantageous life choice.
Why?
Because keeping it real often keeps us grounded in a negative state of being, that’s why.
Think about it. When was the last time you heard someone say he or she was “keeping it real,” but was speaking from a place of positive truth, rather than negative truth?
As for me, the answer to that question is never.
Honesty can be positive.
Here’s the thing, honesty and positivity aren’t mutually exclusive. It IS 100% possible to focus on what is going well and be simultaneously honest. Honesty stems from more than just complaints and irritation.
I could honestly talk about the things I appreciate, the things I had been blessed with or the love I have for certain people and situations.
In fact, I would go so far to say that “keeping it real” actually NEGATES a lot of the honesty in our lives. When we focus on keeping it real from a negative standpoint, we ignore the positive in our reality. We skew reality toward the negative more than it honestly is.
For example, “keeping it real” about all of the reasons you hate someone ignores all of the honestly good qualities in that same person.
“Keeping it real” about how much you hate your job ignores all of the blessings and good things that come to you as a result of your job.
From my standpoint, all “keeping it real” really does is shove our perspective to being more grounded in negativity than is necessary.

So, if you must be real, be real and positive more than you are real and negative. Honesty is a virtue, but it can be used in a loving and kind way or in a destructive way. We get the option on how to apply it.
