8 Limiting Beliefs That Plague the Spiritual Community

Would you consider yourself a part of the spiritual community?

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you are probably well-aware that I am a proponent of the Law of Attraction.  I know that many of my readers are spiritually-minded, kind and insightful people who care about others and who want to make the world a better place.

However, while the spiritual community is often very well-intended, at times it promotes struggle and hardship through limiting beliefs without even knowing it.

I’ve been on social media for years, and I love seeing so many spiritually-themed blog posts, memes and videos.  Knowledge of spirituality and metaphysics has grown tremendously over the years.

However, not everything that glitters is gold, and not everything labeled as “spiritual” actually alleviates spiritual suffering or promotes unity, love and spiritual ascension.

Below are 8 common limiting beliefs in the spiritual community that make life harder than it needs to be.  With the Law of Attraction, we create more of whatever we focus on, so focusing on the limiting beliefs below actually causes an expansion of these problems and limitations.

We live in a universe based on attraction, and we get what we believe in.  When we choose to believe in the ideas below, we bind ourselves to them, and our reality reflects them in greater strength and frequency.

Common Limiting Beliefs in the Spiritual Community Today:

  1. People who have money are corrupt and/or greedy. Money erodes spirituality.
  2. You have to eat organic/gluten free/vegan in order to have a high vibration.
  3. The government is corrupt.
  4. Drugs/alcohol lower your vibration/prevent you from being “spiritual.”
  5. You must bring awareness to social problems like hunger, violence, or illness in order to find the solutions to them.
  6. Humans are destroying the planet.
  7. You need to get rid of the negative/toxic people in your life if you want to be happy.
  8. The “elites” are conspiring against the rest of us.

I know the premise of this article may be unpopular with some, and I understand why.  After all, there is factual basis for these limiting beliefs. These issues and limitations do exist in our universe, and I certainly do not dispute the fact that there is evidence to support these claims.

Because these issues exist, they have been commonly debated and discussed and have ramped up a lot of momentum in the spiritual community. At the heart of these discussions are always passionate people who want to leave behind a better world for our children.

However, just because these problems and limitations exist and we want to get rid of them, our attention to them does nothing to make life easier on any of us. In fact, our attention to these issues literally makes the problems worse and the limitations more binding.

To prove my point, here are a few questions to consider:

  1. Has our attention to the problems in the government made the government less corrupt? If whistleblowing and exposing corrupt politicians was effective, wouldn’t our government be free of corruption by now?
  2. Has raging against the elite class evened the playing field at all? Have you noticed that the separation between the upper and middle class has actually widened dramatically as we’ve paid more attention to the disparity between the social classes?
  3. Have you ever noticed that what is considered “unhealthy” changes as time goes on and we can’t seem to truly pinpoint what is healthy vs. what is unhealthy? For example, in the 80s sugar was the devil, and aspartame was touted as the healthy solution. Today, though, it’s the other way around! No matter how much we figure out what is unhealthy, new nutritional “problems” keep cropping up.

In any event, you will see quickly that focusing on problems and limitations does not create lasting and effective solutions. Instead, when we focus on problems, they expand and become more commonly known and experienced.

So while many people feel they must focus on limitations and problems out of duty or responsibility, this is actually a misconception.  Spreading awareness only enhances and expands limitations and problems.

Why does spreading awareness expand problems and limitations?

Well, the truth is, we live in a universe with infinite realities.  There are infinite versions of this world and our life in it, some “good” and some “bad.” There is a version of the world plagued by poverty, corruption and greed, another one radiating love and light, and a version for every possible combination between the two.

We get to choose what version of the world we experience through our focus. We can choose to focus ourselves into realities where problems and limitations like these exist, or we can choose to focus ourselves into realities where these issues are relatively unheard of.

This is how the Law of Attraction works.  Out of a sea of infinite outcomes, each of us gets to align with whatever outcome we are focused on through our attention and our belief.

This is why some people get cancer from smoking at a young age, and others smoke into their 80s or 90s without incident. It’s why some people can eat whatever they want and stay trim while others gain weight without eating much at all.

The truth is, there are no “rules” that apply to everyone and every situation.  We get to decide which rules apply to us individually through our focus and belief.

When we insist on limitations and problems by discussing and debating them, we keep ourselves firmly rooted in a reality where we believe in them and therefore they must exist.

However, though these problems do exist in our current reality, we do not have to continue to live in a world with these issues. We always have the option to change our focus and redirect to a more wanted version of reality.

How do we redirect ourselves to a “better” version of reality?

Well, the first thing to realize is that it simply isn’t possible for us to eradicate problems and it isn’t possible for us to standardize the “right” way to live life. We live in a universe of inclusion, not exclusion.

Everything is possible and must exist in an infinite universe.  The good and the bad, the popular and the unpopular, the likely and the unlikely all must exist somewhere.

It isn’t your job, or my job, or anyone else’s job to eliminate all of the problems. Additionally, it isn’t anyone’s job to define the “right” way to live or be spiritual, because these are individual choices that each of us has the ability to create in our own lives.

In other words, it’s possible to be healthy and eat junk food.  It’s possible to get cancer from junk food.  It’s possible to be on drugs and be very spiritual, and it’s possible to be on drugs and be extremely disconnected.

It’s possible to keep the negative people in your life and be happy, and it’s possible to be surrounded by toxic people who drag you down.  It’s even possible for toxic people to change! It can go whichever way we focus it into being.

To align with the world we prefer, we just have to let go of the world we don’t prefer.  We let go of the world we don’t prefer by letting go of the debates, the arguments and the discussion of all of the problems that plague humanity in the realm of the universe we would like to leave.

We don’t let go because we don’t care, or because we want to be ignorant and certainly not because it’s easier to turn a blind eye.  Rather, we let go because we care and because we are enlightened to the fact that our focus aligns us to the world we live in and experience.

We let go because we want to live in a world where generosity, prosperity, health and kindness abound for everyone. We let go because we know we cannot help anyone by focusing on their problems.

Universal truths

At the end of the day, there will always be a way to negatively focus, and therefore there will always be problems when we go looking for them. There are versions of this world much worse than the one we live in, and we can focus ourselves down much further if we choose to.

However, the same is true for the opposite end: there will always be a way to positively focus, and there are versions of the world much better than this one we live in. We can reach new heights through focusing our attention into these realms.

It can always get worse, but it can also always get better.

Ascend to the next level.  Release yourself from the responsibility to change things you cannot change about this corner of the universe, and instead focus yourself into into the corner you’d prefer to exist in. Allow yourself to experience what’s possible, rather than what already is.

Absolutely amazing as always! I do hope and believe this article will be widespread and garner awareness – I will be sharing this with friends as well who don’t quite fully understand why yes I am pro-black lives matter (for example) but I don’t choose to focus on the division of the people.

I remember a quote from “The Secret” that said, “Mother Teresa wasn’t anti-war she was pro-peace” .. That quote isn’t verbatim LOL But you get the idea!

    Thank you as always xo!

Hi Andrea, you are totally correct and address a challenge that many of has run into when we have awakened to what is happening and where it needs to go! We just have to focus on what we want! Part of the situation is maintaining our focus long enough on what we want to really start affecting change.

Over the last five years I have realized how important it is to help people learn to use the Law of Attraction effectively. Thank you for all you are doing and keep up the good vibration! I’ll do my part too.

I find your blog post interesting and right on in many ways, Andrea. There are a lot of limiting beliefs that are propagated by “spiritual teachers,” however well-meaning. I would add one more to this, that being the sole focus on the Law of Attraction.

The movie The Secret has promoted this Divine Law as the end all of end alls for lack. Unfortunately, it has led individuals down a path of just focusing on what they want, rather than doing the internal excavation to dissolve/resolve what else might be in the way of Harmony and Well Being. Not that this is necessarily wrong, however Eleven Divine Laws of the Universe exist and it is important that ALL of them be in Harmony. This Harmony creates a state of innate well-being and deep connection with Source from which we naturally gravitate to all that supports us in alignment with our True Divine Nature.

Bob Proctor, who was one of my teachers before The Secret was created and was one of the presenters in the film, has said many times in his private workshops that the sole focus on the Law of Attraction has done a great disservice to many who have been unable to create the life of their dreams because they haven’t done the internal work. I’ve included a list of these Laws below, and Bob occasionally offers free basic workshops on these Laws for those who are interested in learning more.

Personally, creating a practice of deep discernment with everything that comes to me has been my most valuable “spiritual teaching.” BLISSings!

    These Laws are:

    The Law of Right Thinking
    The Law of Supply
    The Law of Attraction
    The Law of Receiving
    The Law of Increase
    The Law of Compensation
    The Law of Non-Resistance
    The Law of Forgiveness
    The Law of Sacrifice
    The Law of Obedience
    The Law of Success

Answers to your “things to consider”

Consideration 1. Probably much more less corrupt than if no one cared or noticed. But since people do, then they can not do way to much way to visible. Cuz that would probably “wake up” (make people realise) way faster anf many more who don’t care now would also be able to see and not being able to deny. Then the ‘elite’ would have probably almost every human on earth against them, I bet even wealthy people would start care more about a fellow human than pieces of paper with numbers on it. And if you really think that the corruption would be gone by now, then i have to say that the elite has been in controll way before their corruption was ‘highlighted’. Therefore it will take time to break the system, we are in it already and to few cares. If more cared then things would go faster. The guilty ones already has several others to be blamed, many of us do focus on their ‘scapegoats’ instead of the source.

Consideration 2. As i said in “1.”, we are already in their system. People with wealth has had so much time to adapt the snobby mentality. And with mind programming, like from the TV and its PROGRAMMES. People has been dumbed down systematically way many years ago in order to even get to this point. And the terms “low class, middle class, high class” also has a reason to help the elite. How? First if a un-wealty person (Low Class) goes to a very wealthy person (High Class) and start talking to them about all the corruptions, how well would the wealthy listen or care what “this low class, uneducated (and so on)”. Im not saying every wealthy person is a snob that (automatically in most cases) looks down on a fellow human for having a “low-class” status. Also many “Mid. Class” peoples looks down on “Low Class” peoples. If a bum came to you and said many things about one or more conspiracies, would you listen or would you be afraid to get robbed (or even touched) by this person? I know i have to be on my atleast top 2 moods to even listen a little. If im below top 5 I would probably look at them with a look that says “fucking bum” or “fucking crackhead”, if i am below my top 10 it is possible I would get aggressive and threatening and then even physical. This is something i dont like about myself tho, i hate looking down on anyone, no matter what their ‘status’ is. I really want to live without judging others based on looks pr wealth. Yes there are those who want to rob or hurt me/you, but believing one can trust someone with plenty money more than someone with NO money is just… well i almost judged, but that belief is not my problem since i dont have it.

Consideration 3. Is this “thing to consider” serious? I dont know about u in the USA, but i have not seen once any kind of promotion that sugar would be healthy, as a little child there was on tv commercial that sweets/candy and soda (like coca cola and so on) is bad on your teeth, and that one should buy V6 gum to chew on to help strengthen your teeths (of course the gum didnt… but is had fluoride in it and, must i say more?).

    And think about this please.
Who are the people that decide what goes mainstream? I mean there are “highly educated” (ppffftt haha) scientists that claimed and some still claims that Marijuana is dangerous for you, and that you loose brain cells (and way yo much more BS). Sooo i must ask, are u sure u want to trust the government to be truthful when they spend money and time on spreading (and then defending) lies? They create problems/sickness/illness just so people will have to pay in order to get better. Not fully healthy tho, but better. A healthy person is a customer lost and they loose cash that they need to keep humans busy with nonsense instead of living life.

I feel like u might be on their side when u wrote these 3 ‘considerations’ and also alot that u wrote in your article… one example (and only one of many!). U say, and i quote ” In any event, you will see quickly that focusing on problems and limitations does not create lasting and effective solutions. Instead, when we focus on problems, they expand and become more commonly known and experienced.” End quote.

If there is a problem and one doesnt try to fix it then at least 2 things are bound to happen (if one are lucky there is a 3rd way, that is that someone else takes care of the problem). Nr 1 there is. Problem is getting bigger. Nr 2 is. Problem just stays a problem without expanding, and doesn’t go away or getting any smaller. If a problem just disappears it is most likely one of these 2 reasons. Nr 1. The one that is making the problem active has stopped doing so, and if he/she/they stopped cuz u ignored it, then that passive “solution” will work. But i doubt the elites motivation to create problems is only to annoy you and will stop when u are not annoyed…
Nr 2. Someone else took care of it and u walk around thinking it was you cuz u let it be.

And u wrote, i quote “If you’ve been reading my articles for any length of time, you are probably well-aware that I am a proponent of the Law of Attraction. I know that many of my readers are spiritually-minded, kind and insightful people who care about others and who want to make the world a better place.” Unquote.

It doesnt mean u are not on their side..It could be a long term plan, talk good and about spirituality, but only so people notice that ‘ah someone is also spiritual and is willing to share’. That creates a confident among readers that eventually will absorb your words without analysing them, beacuse of they have confidence in you since probably a time back, so many has maybe stopped analysing so much.

Im just speaking my mind cuz this doesn’t feel right, im not judging. I hope that u can discuss in an adult way if i am wrong. Discuss without defending, defending will make me even more suspicious of this site, and if u go defence – hostile, then i will know that this is not valid.

If u are true then u will display a certain response and choice of words and that is not an act that can just keep up without defending, but rather explaining.

If u aint true, it will also show in choice of words and reaction.

    Hi Krille

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you that there is much evidence that these are indeed issues in our world. Most certainly, they do exist! My point is simply that we have created our reality through our thoughts and our focus.

Through focusing on these issues intently, they have come into the foreground, and have gained momentum through the Law of Attraction. From my perspective, it isn’t that anyone is screwing us over or any of these rules actually have to “exist,” but rather through our personal focus we have created a reality where they are valid and they do exist. As a result of our focus, investigation and debate on these issues, we have created a reality where certain foods often lead to poor health. We have created a reality where there is a disparity of wealth and abundance. No one did it to us, we did it to ourselves.

For example..have you ever had a bad day that just got worse and worse and worse? Perhaps early in the day I get irritated about something small, but then my attention to the irritation draws more irritations to me. The more I focus on these annoyances, the more of them stack one on top of the next. This is an example of how focusing on the negative creates more negativity and chaos into my life.

However, if we direct our thoughts to a more consciously positive place, we attract more consciously positive events and circumstances. This is why some people have all the luck, or always seem to be happy. Their positive focus yields more positive results.

I know this is a controversial point, but I bring it up to help bring clarity on how reality is constructed and our place in it. Of course, not everyone will agree, and that’s OK. I encourage you to think about this in your own way and come to your own conclusions.

    Best Regards,
    Andrea 🙂

You are one of the few LoA teachers who have really understood it! I first learned about the Law 15 years ago and have since created great things! However, sometimes I fall back into old habits and then it’s really good to remind yourself of the possibilities. Your site is a great source for me, especially on changing one’s current reality. Thank you for your inspiration!
