3 Signs You are Your Own Worst Critic (& What to Do About It!)
Do you think you are your own worst critic?
When we find ourselves struggling to create the things we want in life, we often think it’s because of outside events, circumstances or people. We point to our unsupportive families, our lack of resources or we bemoan our “bad luck.”
However, when things aren’t going our way, it can only mean one thing: we don’t believe in ourselves.
The truth is, there isn’t anything anyone else can say or do to can stand between you and your dream. Belief taps you into the strongest forces in the universe. Hercules himself couldn’t pry away from a dream you believe in.
The truth is, if you are your own worst critic, you (and you alone) hold yourself apart from your dreams.
So how can you tell if you are your own worst critic? Here are three critical signs:
1. You don’t dare to dream big:
People who dream big believe in their ability to achieve big. Those who believe in their limitations only shoot for the small, more “realistic” dreams. Dreaming big is the number one sign that you believe in yourself.
If there’s something big you’d like to do, be or have in life, give yourself permission to fantasize about it, at least a little! As they say “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
To live a great life, you have to be willing to imagine a great life for yourself. There’s no room for self-criticism on the path to big dreams.
2. You are so caught up in the short term you forget the big picture:
If you have a big dream, but your focus is on the problems and issues going on right now, you are in the process of criticizing yourself.
Keep your vision long, and if you’re going to focus on anything in life, focus on the end game. Don’t get sucked into spending all of your valuable time worrying about the short-term struggles and fumbles, or that’s all you’ll ever have in life.
So what if you fall down? So what if you lose a little money? So what if you get rejected?
Honestly, who cares about the problem you are dealing with right now if at the end of the day you actually reach your dream? Will you be beating yourself up for your current struggles on the day you reach the finish line?
Trust me, you won’t. So why beat up on yourself now?
Just remember, what’s happening right now doesn’t mean squat. Your current reality is just your current reality, but up ahead, anything is possible.
Things can change on a dime. Big things can happen suddenly and unexpectedly. What’s going on right now might be the last thing that happens before you hit that big breakthrough you’ve been wanting.
Don’t let what’s going on right now blind you to the possibility of a brighter future.
3. You worry about what other people think about your dreams:
Dreams are a very personal thing, and ultimately you are the only one who can determine what you really want in life. No one else can possibly understand your vision, so what anyone else thinks is 100% irrelevant.
When we worry about what the other guy thinks we are ALWAYS in the process of criticizing ourselves and questioning our intuition.
Don’t let some compassionless jerk who isn’t following his or her dreams get in your head. Don’t take on the same “loser mentality” of other people who are willing to settle for less in life. Don’t be that guy who looks down on your dreams and tells you no.
There are plenty of people in the world who will criticize you if you let them, but you don’t have to be one of them!
So do you think you are your own worst critic?
If you think you’ve been holding yourself back with self-criticism, here’s a favor I’d like you to do for yourself starting right now:
Make it your new mission in life to get behind yourself and treat yourself with kindness. Get up each morning and focus on your greatness, and drop the criticism as much as you can. Pride yourself on what you are doing well, and remind yourself of the big things you’ve already done.
Allow yourself to dream the big dreams, stop beating yourself up over the little stumbles and don’t let anyone else’s opinion (or perceived opinion) become your personal motto in life.
Treat yourself the way you would treat someone you believe in. Fake it ‘till you make it if you have to.
The truth is, if you want to reach your dreams you have to be your biggest cheerleader. You have to believe in yourself in order to tap into the energy that creates worlds.
You just can’t reach what you want in life through criticizing yourself and arguing for your limitations. It defies the law of the universe.
Always remember to be your biggest source of strength, because this is the most important job you’ll ever have in life. Support yourself, and watch what happens.
XO, Andrea
