The Warrior Scholar: Living A Well Rounded Life

“The Warrior Scholar: Living A Well Rounded Life “ was written and recorded by guest contributor, Samuel Kronen.

Balance is the most underestimated virtue in all of human existence.

Without the capacity to be internally harmonized, to round out the myriad aspects of one’s own personality and perception, we inevitably succumb to angst and cognitive disarray.

We are both lovers and fighters, both masculine and feminine, both selfish and selfless, and until this comes to be wholly understood and embodied will never meet our fullest potential as movements of consciousness.

The Warrior Scholar

The Warrior Scholar is the highest archetypal attainment of the human experience, and if this archetype is wholly embodied then we will invariably come to live a well rounded, equanimous, and balanced life.

This archetype is characterized by the capacity to personify both the hard and the soft. He is both a soldier, and a poet. He is both a samurai, and an artist. He is both capable of stepping foot on the battleground, as well as tending to a needy child. This holistic state of perception greatly expands his power and instrumentality, and surely this is something that is fundamental to human optimization.

To remain capitulated to simply one manner of being, to abide at only one end of the experiential spectrum, is to deeply hinder the quality of our awareness. The opposites must come to be existentially integrated, otherwise we are without an acute sense of wholeness and fulfillment.

We all have a shadow side. Every action and state of being contains within it the very seed of its correlative opposite. If I am outwardly very confident, bold, and daring, then it is implicit that inwardly I have feelings of vulnerability, sensitivity, and tenderness. Perception exists on a dualistic scale, and if this fact is neglected then we are removed from our true nature.

In the words of the prominent psychologist Carl Jung, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

We must see that we are both.

The problem arises when we identify with merely one quality of being. If we see ourselves solely as one and not the other, then we lose sight of the all-encompassing and all-encapsulating nature of consciousness. This is a detrimental misperception, for preeminence is given to a false narrative, a rather narrow and singular state of mind.

To identify with something is to make oneself the same as that, and therein when we identify as being a confident or self-assured person then anything that comes to challenge that conceptualized identity is perceived as hostile and damaging. Here, the truth is negated. The fact of who and what we are has no chance to manifest or flourish. We isolate ourselves from our innate strength and potentiality, as well as from our most heartfelt longings and proclivities.

Do not confine yourself to but one mode of being, for to do so is to live without the tremendous vibrancy and abundance that comes with a balanced and well rounded disposition. To see that you are everything, that you are made up of both the Yin and the Yang, that you exist along a constantly fluctuating plain of thought and behavior, is to feel the fullness and beauty of life.

This is what it means to be a person. You are both the warrior and the scholar, and when these seemingly opposing qualities of being are fully integrated you then come to actualize your deepest potential as a human being.
