7 Things to Remember When You Feel Like a Failure
It’s not easy to feel like a failure. Perhaps you’ve experienced this feeling when going after a new job, trying to lose a few pounds or attempting to learn a new skill. After a few setbacks, you might be thinking it’s time to throw in the towel. Why bother?
No matter how you feel in the present moment, your dreams and goals are always worth going after. So next time you feel like a failure, take a moment to remember the following things.
When You Feel Like a Failure, Remember:
1. We all feel like a failure sometimes.
You are not alone. It’s normal to feel like a failure from time to time. Shoot, I felt like a failure yesterday (which, not surprisingly, is why I’m writing this article today). We all struggle with this state periodically, and there’s nothing wrong with you for feeling this way when you do. Embrace it as a normal, human emotion.
2. Failure can be a great motivator.
If everything was sunshine and roses all of the time there’d be nothing to reach for. The feeling of failure is often what inspires us to set off toward greater dreams and accomplishments. Failure can be a fantastic motivator.
3. Failure can be a great lesson.
Failures are often lessons designed to teach us something we need to know as we move further down our path. A stumbling block in the here and now may very well be preparing you for greatness down the road. It might not be a welcomed obstacle today, but in the future you might look back and say, “I’m so glad that happened!”
4. You’ve gotten knocked down before and lived to tell about it.
You’re tough. The game of life can be brutal at times, and if you’re still ticking you’ve survived failures before. Give yourself some credit, because you are capable of handling defeats.
5. The best victories in life are usually offset by failure.
I challenge you to think back on your greatest accomplishments. I guarantee you felt like a failure at least a few times on your way to your most rewarding successes. Victory just isn’t that sweet when it comes easy.
6. Failures make us more compassionate towards other.
Our struggles are why we care about others and seek to help each other in times of need. Without feeling failure we wouldn’t be as loving and compassionate as we’ve grown to be. The struggle you’re dealing with in the present may make you more receptive to the needs of someone else down the road.
7. Failures make great stories.
When all else “fails,” remember that eventually you will be able to tell the story of how you got knocked down and got back up. Someday, a present moment of failure may become one of the greatest inspirational stories of your life.
So the next time you find yourself defeated and ready to throw in the towel, remind yourself of these seven statements. Remember, your dreams and goals are worth every ounce of effort you put into them and every stumbling block you encounter. Hang in there, and you’ll find your way out of the darkness and back into the light.
Stay motivated my friends!

Thank you for this article, because that is exactly how I have been feeling…like a FAILURE. I have been under the weather lately, what with sciatica and eye surgery coming up…nothing real swrious, but I have been faltering in my writing. This is my first book and I wanted to have it ready for publication by the end of this year…now I don’t know. Thanks again.

Glad you like the article Lawana. Hang in there. We all have these moments…keep reaching for your strength. Best of luck with your book, and remember-one step at a time! Don’t worry so much about the end of the year, just worry about what you are doing here in the present. That’s how we manage large goals. 🙂

Great article Andrea! Failure can make you stronger in the end. Many highly successful people including authors have often failed hundreds of times before seeing any success. As long as you have the strength to get up again and carry on, you will succeed in the end.

Thanks Kathy! Much appreciated 🙂

Andrea, I read your blogs regularly before I start my day job shifts. I have lots of goals – and the day job is not one of them 🙂 I often feel like a failure before reading, but then get these reminders from you. I’ll be sharing this one with friends. Thank you for all you do!
